PC Gamers, Say No to $69.99

The recent console releases, please stop calling them "next gen", came with a test. Developers wanted to see if console loyalists were willing to pay $69.99 as a base price for a new game from a major studio. It is sad for me to report that the console community has failed us all. Yes, people are more than willing to pay for this ridiculous amount for a game since they still continue to ask for this price for more and more new releases. To those who also game on the Personal Computer, now they are testing us. I knew that this would happen. Square Enix has dared to put this price tag on Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrate and the upcoming Forspoken. I beg of you, do not pay this amount for these games.

Utterly disgusting. And yes, I am also commenting on Cloud's ugly face.

My Switch 2021 Year in Review

It's time for another official Switch yearly gaming data straight from Nintendo! I know I don't game that much on the Switch but I really like that Nintendo put a lot of efforts into the data presentation this year, complete with animated webpages and all. They even include comparison to last year's data, which is delightfully surprising. Well done, Nintendo!

The Steam Awards 2021 Nominations

Steam's Autumn Sale is here (11/24/21 - 12/01/21) and you know what that means? It's time to nominate games for The Steam Awards! As a new tradition I have just started last year, I am posting my nominees on this site. It's fun to go through the inductions of games released this year to find the right one for each category. The Game of the Year nominee is an easy one though but it did take a while for me to fill up the rest. Enjoy my list of nominees!

Miku Hair Emergency!

Something horrible happened today when I was going around the Game Room, checking out games and inspecting my collectibles, which is something I do every so often, especially when I am feeling really down. I was cleaning the dust off the bases of my Hatsune Miku figurines and when I got to the Racing Miku 2019, her left ponytail suddenly fell out of her head! I was completely shocked. I thought maybe the connection was just loose but upon closer inspection, the peg on the ponytail that was inserted into the head had broken off and the other half remained lodged deep inside of Miku's brain.

My poor Miku... I've slathered some glue on the broken peg and begged for a miracle.

11 Before 11

I made the jump last night. I am now on Windows 11. I got the upgrade option a couple of days ago and I was a little apprehensive about doing it after reading about some potential gaming performance hindrance. Though the reports of massive issues seemed overblown, which is typical whenever there is a Windows upgrade, after looking at the test results from a variety of sources that showed the plus and minus fluctuations depending on the games and security settings, I concluded that it was indeed safe for me to proceed.

The new theme is cute but isn't it time to make animated ones a standard?

Game Library: Celebration or Condemnation?

I am a loner, that fact is probably quite obvious. I do find solace in doing things on my own. I find that experience comforting, soothing... complete! Since an early age, I have always found myself at odds with the general populace. I felt out of place growing up because there was a standard of social conformity that I just couldn't possibly abide by. Though the social refrain began to be more relaxed into my adult life, being lucky to be in a part of the world that's modern enough, I took with me a childhood that was spent mostly in my own head. What you have now is a guy who still feels awkward in social settings, someone who is still learning the norm of friendly conversations. At one point, I thought that perhaps I needed desperately to make real human connections with others and that lead to a period of confusion and longing but that's behind me now.

Gothtober 2021: Embracing Fear

The Gothtober 2021 event on my YouTube channel for the entirety of October of this year (it will definitely be a yearly streaming thing from now on) has done me good. As you may already know, I am really, really bad at horror games these days. I just couldn't stand them because they tend to be too scary for me. I used to be able to tolerate horror games. As a matter of fact, I remember playing the first Silent Hill alone, at night in my small apartment during my undergraduate years. I can still recall how thrilling the game was because it was very scary. Fear used to be an actual flavor, not an unwanted side effect.

Killing off these horror games one title at a time.

Prettiest amiibo: Zelda & Loftwing

Out of all the Zelda games out there, the best representation of our titular character for me is found in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. You can read my glowing impression of that version of her by clicking here. It shouldn't be a surprise then that the best and most beautiful amiibo that Nintendo has ever produced to this point is the Zelda & Loftwing amiibo that was recently released alongside the game's HD version for the Nintendo Switch:

amiibo perfected.

Board Games Are Taking Over

Board games are cool and all, I have quite a number of them now, but as someone who is primary living in the video gaming world, things are getting a little out of control. I started getting into physical tabletop games in May of this year, and just three months in, I think I have reached the saturation point for this additional hobby due to its high demand for storage space. Let me show you how they have infiltrated and taken over my Game Room:

Where there are video games, there will also be tabletop game boxes.

Fantasy Curious

I have been a fan of the Final Fantasy series since the release of VII on the original PlayStation in 1997. I have fond memories of playing that game during my undergraduate years and since I had never played any Japanese role playing games before it, the game felt fresh both in its narrative and gameplay. I was able to relate to the whole Tifa-Cloud one-sided love situation because well, it was not easy being gay during those years for me. After VII, I pretty much would induct anything FF into my Game Library and when Square Enix started transitioning these games to the Personal Computer, specifically Steam, I do my best to support them. With the recent new release of the "Pixel Remaster" series of the early FF games, I took a screenshot of my FF collection on Steam to admire it all and to remind me that the PC is the ultimate place for all gamers.

We all need a little dose of fantasy every now and then.

Feeling Lost & Alone

I have been thinking about life and death a lot recently. It's all pretty depressing, but I found the whole process to be necessary and sobering. What brought this about? Well, with my gaming activities a bit more under control these days, thanks to my focused YouTube streaming, I have also managed to get back into more creative endeavors - specifically, writing my novel, Point to Pathos, that I used to showcase here on this site. I am currently working on 3 novels but PtP is my pet project. Unfortunately, PtP takes a lot from me whenever I write it because it's quite personal to me and also, it's extremely bleak. This reminded me of a conversation I had with a colleague of mine many moons ago. I was in the process of writing a love story which was slated to end with a horrible tragedy. It affected me so much that it seeped into my professional life. My colleague urged me to change the ending for the sake of my own mental health. But I didn't. Sometimes, you have to part with a piece of yourself for your art. I surely did. It changed me. Not for the better. Not for the worse. It just did.

140+ hours in this game to date! I love the way I approach gaming these days!

Game Room Ver. 4.0 Showcase

I just realized that I have never showed the "completed" Game Room Ver. 4.0 ever since I made mention of it last year. This is partly due to the fact that I wasn't - and still am not - sure of the duration of my stay at my current location. For all I know, I might be moving again next month! Uncertainty can really eat at you and it had a feast on me for a long while until I decided that I would just do the best I could with my situation. So I decked out my latest Game Room to the best of my ability and the video below is the result of all of that hard work! Hope you enjoy the tour and sorry for the very long delay!

Valve Shows the Proper Way to Pre-Order

The Steam Deck is available for pre-order starting 10 a.m. PDT this morning and unlike the horror show of the PlayStation 5 and the X-Box Series X launch, Valve overall did it right. Did the Steam store give you an error when you tried to complete the pre-order as soon as it became available? Of course it did. Or should I say, of course it would. I had to take care of an important business around 10 this morning and I tried to complete my pre-order before I leave and I got an error message. I shrugged it off and left and when I came back around 1 p.m., I went back to the cart and completed the pre-order and it went through. I have seen the mad tweets and articles on the Internet about the "difficulties" securing the Deck and I just laughed. Apparently, these people are not familiar with Steam at all because this always happens during big events. The Steam client and website usually cannot handle the amount of traffic they get during the launch of major sales events but things have gotten better over the years. I usually have wait a couple of hours before I am able to start shopping but I didn't have to do that at all last month during the start of the Steam Summer Sale.

See Sony, it's not that hard to do.

Switch Pro Is Here but It's Steam Deck

Such perfect timing. After the recent announcement of the OLED version of the Nintendo Switch that had the Nintendorks plunging into the deepest and darkest depths of depression, Valve just announced a much better alternative. It's a portable Personal Computer custom built for gaming on the go that looks like a Switch, only it's infinitely more awesome and it's called the Steam Deck!

Stealing Nintendo's thunder like a... wait for it, pro.

YouTube Streaming Keeps Me Focused

I have been broadcasting live on YouTube for a little over a month now. Let's just get one thing out of the way: setting up a livestream on YouTube sucks. It sure feels like they are years behind the type of convenience and technology available on Twitch, the livestreaming site of many gamers' choice that recently justified its way into the lucrative softporn industry to make that as mainstream as gaming. On YouTube, you have to update the livestream page before every stream instead of just hitting the live button on your chosen streaming software. But you know what? This stringent, archaic, and definitely nonsensical setup is actually helping me stay focused on the selection of games that I play by curbing my somewhat wild, mood-driven approach to gaming. So maybe, their design, which feels heavy-handed, is intentional after all?

Tuesday, July 6, 2021

Olé! It's Only OLED!

The console cycles don't make any sense anymore. They haven't been since the PlayStation 3 era. First and third party developers don't even utilize the technology that's available to them before they introduce newer, supposedly more powerful consoles, only to run the same ugly, rudimentary games that don't require the newer tech all over again. Well, Nintendo. I may not have been a big fan of yours ever since you abandoned the Wii U so very quickly before its time, but I do commend you for not adding to the cycle madness with today's announcement of your new Switch variant... The OLED model.

Forge Your Fate, Steam-Style!

I absolutely love the deep discounts I've gotten from the recent Epic Games Store Mega Sale - I ended up with a total of 18 new games from that event - but when it comes to thematic creativity of promotional gaming events, Valve just can't be beat. Today is the beginning of the glorious 14-day gamer spending splurge known as the Steam Summer Sale and boy my cart is already fat full of games. This year, while spending hundreds (perhaps thousands) of dollars on your new acquisitions, Valve also wants you to Forge Your Fate, a choose your own adventure activity that can be found on the main store page!

Big Trouble in Little Update

I have never seen this in my 16+ years of using Steam so I thought I would post it here. There was a little update for Biomutant today and when I started the process, the estimated completion time was indeed quite shocking:

The Real Househusband of Anchorage?

I have a made a significant change in the way that I broadcast my gameplay. Since earlier this month, everything is now being streamed live to my YouTube channel and every single one of these sessions will be saved in perpetuity, as long as Google survives us all until the end of the universe that is. You have probably noticed a new link at the top of the blog entitled "LIVE from the Game Room" and the permanent Gaming Diary slot on top of the page. I had previously been streaming on justin.tv/twitch.tv for 11+ years and the time I have spent there was definitely interesting to say the least. I have learned a whole lot about myself, especially over the past couple of years when the viewership numbers have dwindled down to practically nothing. These past few months had me questioning the motivation behind my insistence to attach live streaming on top of every single one of my gaming activities.

Steam Treasure: Pantyhoes

I go through the Discovery Queue on Steam a lot and I allow Valve to show me everything that it has in store, and I mean everything. As you may expect, there are a lot of crapware on Steam but some are just more special than the rest. Today, I found... Pantyhoes.

Play as an idiot who allows himself to be framed by his villainous dad!

An Epic Test of Resolve

The galaxy was testing me today and I was so close to failing that test. While I was working out using Yourself!Fitness on the X-Box, the game glitched out 5 minutes into the routine when I saw Maya, the strict but caring trainer, being stuck in an infinite animation loop. This was quite devastating to me because I was already deep into the groove. I had to reset the system, thus ending my workout session early. I started thinking about replacing Yourself!Fitness with something else. Perhaps I should go back to Ring Fit Adventure on the Nintendo Switch so that I would not encounter this problem anymore on an aging console.

EGS Games Get!

Just a follow up to the previous post about the Epic Games Store Mega Sale 2021. So how many games have I inducted into my Game Library from this cool yes you should participate in it sales event? Quite a bit actually. There are still about 3-4 of games that I am considering to get before the end of the promotional period on June 17th. If you are having a hard time finding the games you should pick up, check out this screenshot for inspiration:

Yes, these include games that are also available on Steam! Can't help it.

Loner the Bored Gamer?

I never thought I would ever say this but during the past few weeks, I have been terribly bored of video games. Surely this is just a minor side effect from the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine? So when I get the second shot, it looks like I will be quitting video games forever? I am just being silly here of course, but I am totally serious about the lack of excitement felt about video gaming lately. I think it had something to do with my current obsession with tabletop games.

My tabletop collection is expanding rapidly in less than a month!

Anti-Vaxxer: Not a Cool Stance

As someone who enjoys his free time at home, mostly playing video games, the shutdown brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic has been made much more tolerable. But I understand the impatience to have things back the way it was so that people can recover both financially and emotionally on top of keeping themselves healthy. This is the reason why we have to do everything we can to get us back there, including getting the COVID vaccine. I was finally able to get my first dose yesterday and had to travel far to get it even, all in the name of quelling the spread of the virus. The arm was mighty sore when I got home and still is now but I am feeling fine. I did get a weird headache on my way back home but that could have been because of the ride than anything else: I normally drive and I am hardly, if ever, a passenger and I think my body couldn't handle that very well, especially since it was a long trip. I know the whole situation with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is concerning but the speed in which the CDC/FDA caught the situation and took action is commendable. To be honest, I would have gone for the J&J vaccine just to one and done it.

Loner the Board Gamer?

Last month's release of Arkham Horror: Mother's Embrace on Steam had lured me into an unexpected world of physical deckbuilding and board games that the title was based on. Judging from the trailer and screenshots, the game itself looks rather interesting. The physical board/deckbuilding games that are available for this Arkham Horror Files franchise however, believe it or not, are a lot more intriguing. Can't believe I am actually saying that something is more exciting than video game! After an exhausting amount of research, bear in mind that I am very new to this world of complicated physical games, I have decided to hold off on getting Mother's Embrace, place Arkham Horror: The Card Game aside for now because it has too many expansions and they are hard to find, skip Arkham Horror: 3rd Edition because it seems to be a weird mix between the two physical games, and went ahead and got Eldritch Horror because of its more open-ended play structure.

Rules, tokens, dice, cards. It's going to be a long night!

Anti-Boxxer: It's a Cool Stance

I have been holding on to the huge Capcom Figure Builder Creator's Model Nergigante box for about a month now and it's time to let it go. It has been sitting in a corner of the Game Room, taking up an unnecessary amount of space that could have been occupied by functional things. Yes, even though I now believe in less is more when it comes to physical gaming items, it doesn't mean that I don't hesitate about doing the right thing immediately every now and then.

The box was in pristine form but it's just something I don't keep anymore.

Terry, Terry, Quite Contrary

Nintendo recently released 3 new amiibos on 03/26/2021 and I remember telling myself to pre-order them early because they are all pretty darn cool, unlike the Cat Mario & Peach that showed up earlier this year - nobody's buying those, they are still very easy to find at the suggested retail price. Still, amiibos are not necessarily a priority for me, just a side-hobby, so I had totally forgotten about them until a couple of days ago. Thankfully, I still managed to score two of them: Banjo & Kazooie - shouldn't they be named Banjo-Kazooie? - and Byleth. No Terry Bogard for me unfortunately unless I want to shell out $50, bummer.

Banjoe & Kazooie looks amazing. That fake flame on Byleth's sword however...
Also, there is a weird protrusion from his sleeve going into the middle of the sword.

ACNH Fashion: Redefining Duck Lips

I have been playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the Nintendo Switch since mid-January of this year and I have been loving it despite the game being the grindiest title on this side of the modern crafting genre. I believe I have found the best looks for my character this week. It's so fashion, it's so adorable... It's so stupid! It's the one aspect of the game that I enjoy the most - customizing my character using the vast options available with seemingly never-ending new pieces being introduced daily. I am wearing this combination at all times and when I change things up, I will make sure to post an update on this site!

The Transformation Begins?

It has been two weeks since I started getting back into Yourself!Fitness on the X-Box and I haven't missed a session... yet! The funny thing about this "game" is that after you have used it for a while, like months into the program, Maya would sometime hint that you can skip a day every now and then. I believe she even encouraged me to not do it on my birthday if I remember correctly. Like I was going to fall for those traps however because let me tell you, getting scolded by Maya when you miss a session didn't feel good at all! Now despite how desperate I am to start shedding some weight off, I am taking things slowly this time around. I started a new profile and after my fitness evaluation, Maya recommended that I work out five 15-minute sessions a week. When I saw that at first, I wasn't too happy. My peak with the program in the past was four 30-minute sessions and one 15-minute session per week. So I started re-adjusting the schedule like mad until I came to my senses: if I pushed myself too hard, I will most likely get injured again - I am older now - and that would mean quitting yet another workout routine. So I left it at the recommended level and just recently bumped ONE day to 30-minutes after my second evaluation - the game checks your overall progress every 10 workouts.

Maya asks not because she cares... It's because she doesn't want you to slack off.

Haven Is Real, Heaven Is Not

Sometimes, a game is wrapped around such an inspiring, clever, and beautiful idea that you can't help but immediately fall in love with it. Such is the case with Haven by The Game Bakers which follows the plight of two lovers who, as the game describes itself, "gave up everything and escaped to a lost planet to be together." The whole idea of the star-crossed lovers is not new and is of course grounded in reality. In the world we live in, people have been and many still are forbidden to fall in love on the basis of political affiliation, social status, skin color, religion, and sex. The game embraces "love, rebellion, and freedom" as everyone should be by now. But human evolution on this matter has been slow, thanks to old traditions - most notably religion since it can't be questioned - and perhaps, tragically, this will never change because humans are forever cursed to be this way. The title of the game is perfect: Haven. It's common where we are often told that we ought to secure the rewards of the afterlife, the so-called "heaven". But when the values represented to achieve that don't match our own, it's no longer our truth. It's always interesting to me that people are quick to justify their life choices for something that's not based in our reality. Singer Belinda Carlisle seemed to get the message in the late 80's with her hit Heaven Is a Place on Earth but sadly, that didn't become the turning point for humanity. And she got one thing wrong: Heaven just doesn't exist anywhere, period. Haven however, does because it's a completely realistic concept.

Do you smile when you see two people kissing or do you start judging them?

From Miku to Boa to Nergigante?!

What a jump eh? So yes, what began as a negligible side hobby has now turned into a quite a monster... literary! Behold, the latest entry to my slowly expanding collection of figurines, Capcom Figure Builder Creator's Model Nergigante:

A beautiful, though menacing, 12" monster.

Letting Go Is Painful Yet Liberating

I have moved so many times these past 5 years that I really don't want to do it anymore. Unfortunately though, I will be doing it again in the near future and I am not really looking forward to it. Being in a new place is actually nice and refreshing. It's the act of moving that is extremely exhausting, especially when it comes to managing the transition of my physical gaming items - not to mention the recent additions of fancy figurines. As much as I hate thinking about moving, I am ready for it however. I have started cutting the fat off my gaming collection as in, you know, those boxes and product enclosures that I know I can certainly live without. At this point, what I have is pretty much everything that I want to be with me until the day I leave this existence.

Moving amiibos is easy. I just layer them in between my clothes and call it a day.

Before You Get Fat You See the Ring?

Fitness is an important part of my life but these days, I have not been keeping up on keeping fit. Late last year, I started using Ring Fit on the Nintendo Switch as my go to exercise routine and I was able to keep to my schedule for about a month and a half before I had to stopped when I scraped the crap out of my left knee. Though I didn't see much progress in terms of weight loss, the routine did increase my stamina and endurance. I wouldn't say that Ring Fit doesn't work because in the past, whenever I get into an exercise routine, it would usually take at least two months for me to see real physical difference. 3+ months later, I feel that it's high time to get moving again. I have made the decision to stop using Ring Fit however because I know that I am not exercising as intensely as I could: too much fun, not enough sweat. I like that Ring Fit made me feel like I was playing a game instead of working out, and that very factor dominated my choices of exercise routines these past several years. But it's time to take it seriously again, without any gimmicks this time around like motion tracking nor cute monsters to kill. It's time to go back to Maya with Yourself!Fitness on the X-Box. It looks like the last time I attempted a return to Yourself!Fitness was in 2014, which feels like a lifetime ago. I hope that things will go smoothly this time around so that I can get the same result the first time I committed to this workout program. Oh, and there will be no streaming me doing my workouts anymore because I want no distractions. I want to be in the zone and I want to feel healthy again! Maya's a bit scary though so let's hope for the best!

If there's a will, there's a Maya.

Dumb Protagonist: Nicole Wilson

I just started playing The Suicide of Rachel Foster on the Personal Computer and I am having a real hard time with the game that I am thinking of quitting it. For those who are not familiar with the title, it's about a woman who has to check out an old hotel she inherited from her father and finding herself trapped there because of a severe Montana winter storm. So you can probably guess one of the reasons for my struggle. Yes, finding myself alone in an a large, abandoned hotel is beyond creepy. The surround mix is phenomenal as you get to hear all the shuffles and creaks from every corner of the hotel while the beautiful graphics really portrays both a sense of beauty and desolation. Here's something you probably didn't expect however, more than the fear of finding what is lurking around the next corner, the most troubling thing to me about this game thus far is how stupid and dense the main character truly is.

The killer is inside the hotel with you Ms. Moron!

Miku: A Gateway Figurine?

In some ways, I am pretty sure that collecting Skylanders has made me admire video game figurines, and I do believe that it made me open to collecting amiibos, which later eased my decision to get into enjoying Hatsune Miku in her physical figurine forms. Well, more interest in Miku figurines means more browsing for more of them and with that, I was lured into the world of other Japanese manga/anime/gaming figurines out there. And boy, these figurines are very beautiful and I have been especially enthralled by those made for the One Piece series. Now I personally have not read the manga or watched the anime but I am familiar with the video games made based off this license. When I saw this Boa Hancock figurine, I was in love and I just had to get her.

My PlayStation 2020 Wrap-Up

I didn't know that Sony was also doing a year-in-review summary of their users' activities like Nintendo did. Apparently, this happened for 2019 but I completely missed that. Now let's see how I did with the PlayStation platforms last year.

I really didn't expect this to be informative but it was.

17 games? I remember playing Sakura Wars and of course Miku.
Who knew Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Future Tone was an action-adventure game?

Am I A Miku Enthusiast Now?

Alright, so the last time that I showcased my Hatsune Miku figurines here was in 2018. Well, my collection of Mikus have expanded since. I started with 2 back then and now, I have a total of 6 of them. Okay, so it's not that bad right? I have to be honest with you though: I have a pre-order coming later this week and another in March. I am obviously hooked, perhaps for life.

Miku sees a friend in this revenant.

Valve Index Controllers: Strapped & Trapped

My Valve Index Controllers came in yesterday and I have done some testing on it last night using Valve's own Aperture Hand Lab, which is a short finger tracking demo, and the game Half-Life: Alyx. I started off being very excited about the prospect but ended up finding the whole experience a bit clunky. Bear in mind that this is just a quick first impression after an hour and a half of playtime. My expectation of the peripherals' performance was apparently too high and I also know that I have gotten very comfortable with the HTC Vive Wands so trying out something totally new can be a bit challenging.

I love the cheeky Velcro moment found inside the box, Valve. Clever.

Feels Like $100, Just Not Built Like One

I have been thinking about upgrading my HTC Vive to a Valve Index over the past couple of months and after much contemplations, I have decided to do a half-upgrade. Since I can mix and match components of the Index with my current set, I ended up ordering just the Index Controllers. I haven't lived that long in virtual reality with Steam recording my playtime at 369 hours total since late 2016, which is about 90 hours a year, so I couldn't justify a huge investment on the far superior headset. I am still intrigued by the newfound freedom found with the Index Controllers however in both the finger tracking and object holding mechanics: I am really looking forward to experience these when they arrive in a couple of weeks. On top of the incoming controllers, I have upgraded my launch Vive with the Deluxe Audio Strap. I have been holding off from getting one all this time because I was certain that I would be upgrading my VR headset by now. To me, the default strap for the Vive has been working well though it took some time for the heaviness of the head mounted display on my face to normalize. Now, the Deluxe Audio Strap is ridiculously expensive at $100 and I have waited so long for the price to drop, in which it never did.

I really like the packaging. Just not a fan of the price.
