Silent Hill 3 may not be the best one in the series - that title belongs to the second game - but this entry is the most unique of them all because it features a female lead character. Just like the other Silent Hill games, the main character is hardly a hero: in this case, Heather Morris is a wimpy teenage girl who has a really close tie to the first game. While the other Silent Hill games focuses on the build up of terror at the beginning, this one takes you straight into the hellish nightmare when you first started the game. The newer Silent Hill: Homecoming also took this same approach. The game offers a strong female perspective into the well-established confines of the hellish little town and because of that, you do get a number of decidedly phallic references scattered throughout the game. The graphics are remarkable for the system, especially the in-game cut-scenes, most notably the real time shadows and the detailed 3D character models. The game is very scary but once again, the realistic/sloppy combat mechanics does take you away from the game sometimes.
