RANDOM GAME OF THE DAY:
Downhill Domination (2003)
Developer: Incognito Entertainment
Platform: PlayStation 2
Purchase Date: 07/25/2003
Who knew that there's this much excitement to be had with riding a mountain bike?
Downhill Domination starts up with one of the weirdest intro videos ever made - it shows a baby surrounded by darkness staring at some cog/chain decorated mobile hanging above him or her before this image is superimposed with real life footage of extreme mountain bike riding and an ominous looking human skull. The game is actually more exciting than that lame attempt at being artsy - there are better ways to show excitement and danger that comes with racing down exaggeratedly steep mountain slopes filled with human made and natural obstacles at top speed. You get to select from a group of riders with varying attitudes from different reaches of the world and then SSX your way down some of the longest racing tracks in the genre. The game follows that basic tricks = boost gameplay mechanic and getting some big air is the key to your victory. Of course, this wouldn't be an Incognito game without a bit of nasty weaponry . You can upgrade your physical attacks by collecting power-ups during the race: so you go from punching and kicking your opponents while they are close by to throwing water bottles at them. The graphics are quite impressive because there are plenty of details being streamed onto the screen and I love how long it takes for you to race all the way down to the finish line. The cover art for this game really misses the mark because this is hardly a realistic representation of the sport.
