RANDOM GAME OF THE DAY:

Okage: Shadow King (2001)
Developer: Zener Works
Platform: PlayStation 2
Purchase Date: 10/04/2001

Evil King Stan is so adorable, everybody would want him as a shadow.

Okage: Shadow King is an enjoyable and funny little role playing game, representing the best for the genre during the pre-Final Fantasy X PlayStation 2 years. You play as a little boy who must "adopt" an evil spirit who called himself "Evil King Stan" as his shadow in order to save his little sister from a disease that could potentially turn her into their village's comical relief girl. That description should provide you a decent understanding of the type of offbeat humor that this game contains. Evil King Stan's intention is world domination and for a supposedly powerful demon, his dependency on the boy to do all of his bidding is quite humorous. Overall, the dialogues are often quite entertaining and sometimes you get to choose a response to the ongoing conversations. The game's graphics are quite good for a game released early in the life of the console but it is apparent that the game's weird Burton-esque art style is what saves the game's visuals. The characters have a wide variety of different looks - some of the faces on the supposedly "human" characters don't even look human at all. The game uses a lot of depth of field vision effect but like most that were done during that time, it looks fuzzy and distracting. The battle system is quite basic and even though your character has Stan, he hardly ever fights for you and this really reinforce the whole relationship dynamics between the two. By the way, if you ever wondered where Hironobu Sakaguchi got his idea for Blue Dragon...
