It's all a matter of who can spam the most monsters towards the opponents.
It is not hard to translate Magic: The Gathering trading card game into a video game in its original form. Yu-Gi-Oh! - the proper card battle games and not the strategy role playing variations - proves this and it really flourishes on the Nintendo handhelds. There is an official digital version of the game called Magic Online but it has similar pricing requirements as purchasing the actual physical cards. It all comes down to money: If a proper Magic: The Gathering gets translated into a video game, no one is going to buy the cards anymore because it would probably be more superior in its presentation than just merely looking at decks of card on the table and manually tracking things. Battlegrounds is a terrible re-imagination of the card game, featuring some repetitive gameplay but its real problem is the lack of customization options. From the complex selections of never-ending magic cards that inspired the game's creation, only 70+ spells are available here. Truly a missed opportunity.
