RANDOM GAME OF THE DAY:

Maximo: Ghosts to Glory (2002)
Developer: Capcom Co., Ltd.
Platform: PlayStation 2
Purchase Date: 02/14/2002

They always warn us about making a deal with the Devil...
But they never said anything about making a deal with Death!

Maximo: Ghosts to Glory may sound like a brand of feminine pads (thank goodness for the subtitle) but it is actually a 3D reincarnation of the ultra hardcore action platformer series: Ghouls 'N Ghosts. The tight platforming is still evident even with the full 360 degrees of movement and the enemies as well as the stage layout designs mimic its source material. Though the hero here, Maximo, is not as cool nor manly as the original Arthur but they are both similar when it comes to being in different states of undress whenever they are damaged: from losing their helmets to only wearing an embarrassing pair of boxers. Just like its predecessors, the game is difficult and there are a lot of one-hit deaths whenever you are not careful with jumping between platforms. The game is fun but it's not as great as the games that inspired it because Maximo just doesn't feel right with its full 3D movement, thanks to its rigid camera and low angle view. This series belong in 2D and Capcom agreed to that notion when they released Ultimate Ghouls 'N Ghosts for the PlayStation Portable in 2006.
