*I was feeling a bit down last night, thus the excessive use of karaoke games. It was fun and it was a pretty effective therapeutic session.

RANDOM GAME OF THE DAY:

Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus (1997)
Developer: Konami
Platform: SegaSaturn
Purchase Date: 09/05/2002

Can that large creature be considered a violent antibiotic?

This game is a compilation disc that contains the two Salamander games and the classic Life Force. Both Salamander and Salamander 2 are simpler versions of the Gradius series. The power-up system here is different where the ship can pick up specific power-ups for different attributes like speed or the variety of different weapons that the ship can opt to use. Both games also switch between side-scrolling stages and vertical ones. Just because these games are simpler, it doesn't mean that they are easier. The focus on precise manipulation within confined spaces is evident and it is especially tougher in the second game. Though the title differs, this series is closely linked to Gradius because of the similarities in boss designs, ship names, and the background music. Life Force is a combination of both Salamander and Gradius - it uses the former's flexibility in stage orientation while implementing the latter's more rigid power-up system where a certain number of power-ups must be collected before the ship's attributes can be altered.
