RANDOM GAME OF THE DAY:
Asterix & Obelix: Kick Buttix (2003)
Developer: Éstranges Libellules
Platform: PlayStation 2
Purchase Date: 2004
Asterix has a much fiercer moustache than Mario and Luigi combined.
Though not very popular nor recognizable here in the United States, the two names in the game's title are some of my favorite comic book characters. The game is a fitting homage to the Astérix le Gaulois comic books. It is an action-platformer about a couple of goofy but determined Gauls kicking the buttix out of a Caesar-led Roman army. Other than the ability to switch between the characters, everything else about the game is very straightforward, simplistic, and follows the typical genre conventions: there are platforms to jump on, soldiers to kill, hidden items to find, and helmets to collect as the game's currency. The graphics may not be high-tech but the animations are smooth and they are true to the original materials. My favorite parts of the game are the distinct European humor and the swing attack where you grab hold of your enemy, spin them around a number of turns before propelling them head-first off the screen. The game has a killer sequel that never made it here... How very unfortunate.
