The boss fights are memorable because they are very well designed.
The game may have suffered years of delayed release but the end product was surely worth the wait. The combination of beat-'em-up plus shoot-'em-up is not that offbeat of a hybrid but it is the one unique thing about the game. Though it will never be able to truly compete with the best shooters from Japanese developers, The Red Star does imitate those games quite well especially when it comes to throwing the players with many cool boss fights. The constructions of the bosses should be familiar to fans of the genre, a great homage to what inspired the design of the game. The Red Star works best as a top-down shooter - if it didn't include the brawler mechanics, the game may have transcended into a real classic instead of merely achievening a cult following.
