Lovely doesn't exactly mean pretty, is it?
For the most part, I would research my games thoroughly before I buy them. This means that I would generally look at the reviews by video game critics as well as customer reviews - I only read the basic information about the game and skip the unnecessary "tell all" portion that normally starts at the second paragraph. Most importantly though, I would read the product descriptions carefully, visit the game's website if there's one, and watch the gameplay footage. Video games normally have only one chance to impress me and I take my excessive amount of research seriously to avoid making regretful purchases such as this one. Evil Prophecy was a true impulse buy for me. I didn't know about the game until I saw it sitting on the retail shelf while I was out shopping for some other games. Two things strike me about it: 1) Todd McFarlane of the "Spawn" fame, and 2) Konami. I did a quick math in my head and concluded that there was no way those who could equal to failure. I was wrong however because this game is terrible. It's an action role playing game with a terrible sense of character progression. The story takes place in the late 19th century where four heroes are tasked to eliminate a number of supernatural beings that have been terrorizing Europe. In the story mode, you get to switch between the four characters on the fly. The characters are interesting but the simplistic fighting mechanics feel too similar between the four. There is no joy in leveling up because the only thing you can improve is the limited amount of combos on each character and the only way you can do that is by using each combo repeatedly. The game has a number of collectibles like monster cards and interview clips with McFarlane himself but to have someone go through the horror just to get all of those things is a true definition of "evil".

I feel your pain.
I did the same thing a couple days ago. Went out and saw in the bargain bin for $10 , Turning Point, Fall of Liberty.
I figured its a ps3 game that I heard wasn't too good. But for $10 bucks, it can't be that bad.
Boy was I wrong, now I am forcing my way through this awful title.
