Non-Video Game Video Game Inspired Art

Video games are a big part of my life but I have never infused them into my own artistic creations: my poetry and my fiction writing nor my visual art. I think that I have only drawn a video game character once in my life - and that was a drawing of Hel from the X-Box 360's Too Human because an old friend of mine was obsessed with that character. Yeah, I suspect that he has a mecha-human fetish. I encountered a strange moment earlier this afternoon while I was eating lunch. I was humming a memorable tune from Plants vs. Zombies for the Personal Computer and there was a part of that particular piece I found melancholic. Those who have played the game may think that I am insane because I am sure a majority of people found the soundtrack to the game upbeat and playful. I often find subtle hints of sadness in the weirdest of places: I have approached friends in the past to listen to a piece of music and asked them if they noticed the pain behind a seemingly innocent tune and they always answered with a "no".

Well, back to the lunch epiphany - I have hummed this tune many times before but for some reason, it hit me really hard today. It took me to a really dark place. I figured the strange mixture of fun and desperation in the tune made me think about life and death and the bitter irony of existence itself. I thought, "Somewhere in the world right now, someone is experiencing their final moment of life. One day, that situation will be reversed as I am leaving this world behind forever. Many rationalize that people go to a beautiful place when they die - many also created limitations in this world on how people should live to secure the ticket to go to that place - to me, all the enjoyment and rewards to be found here are what I could experience in my life: things that happened in the past that will also perish with the decay of memory." This really inspired me to work on a drawing today that will become a gift for my significant other. It's a rather depressing piece but it's an important one I think. It doesn't have video game characters nor any video game related imagery on it. I started working on it as soon as I got home. I have stopped for the evening - I really want this to be a surprise - and I still need to get a lot done. Hopefully, I will be able to get it done sometime tomorrow. Thank you Laura Shigihara. Thank you Plants vs. Zombies!

A promised future, with or without you.

July 2010 Gaming Analysis

The results shown below are of course based on the combined data from the Daily Game Log which should provide a clear indication of a game's usage frequency. Bear in mind that even if a game is played twice or more during a particular day, it would still register as 1 in the Day Count column below. In a sense, "merits" are given based on how often a particular game can make me play it again throughout the entire period of the month on a daily basis. A game that makes a gamer play it over and over again or at least spend a lot of time with it... Isn't that what we mostly want from a great game? I don't think it's really fair to count all the way down to the number of hours played since some games only require a short amount of time to properly serve their purposes.

OVERALL BREAKDOWN:

Total Games Played: 63

League of Legends continued to occupy most of my time for the second month in a row. Things are probably going to slow down somewhat for this game in August because of the recent arrival of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty but you never know. I still have several levels to go to reach the end game and hopefully by then, I will amass enough companions to participate in the ranked matches as an organized team. I definitely prefer playing this game compared to playing Heroes of Newerth but that is mainly because of the in-game community. HoN still managed to creep to the third most played game last month and I do miss playing its more diverse and definitely more creative hero selctions.

The X-Box 360 is seeing less and less playtime for sure. Whenever I was on it, I spent a majority of the time playing Deathsmiles. Though not the most complex nor the most difficult of Cave games, it is a lot of fun and is both tailored to beginners and masters of the shoot-'em-up genre. I had a lot of fun climbing up the leaderboards but I still have played the online co-op yet. Looking for random matches is an impossibility because the online lobby is always empty and I visited it several times on each session of play. I found people to play with on gaming message boards and other conspicuous places but after they accepted my friend invite, they always found a reason or two not wanting to play the game with me. Maybe there are co-op related achievements and they have already gotten them? That's usually the case because most console gamers I have met these days play video games only to hunt those things instead of playing just to have fun.

Best New Game of the Month:
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (Personal Computer)

Unexpectedly Forgotten New Game of the Month:
Disciples III: Renaissance (Personal Computer)

I Missed You I Want You Game of the Month:
Arc Rise Fantasia (Nintendo Wii)

1 AM Grind

It's 1:22am - I am finally going to bed... Since early this evening, I have been playing SpellForce and SpellForce 2 alternatively to level up my new characters. I guess with the recent craving for some level grinding combined with the time spent playing StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, I found the SpellForce games to be a perfect mix of those two types of experiences in one sitting. When I decided to write about SpellForce Universe, I never expected that I would continue playing the games this extensively at this time. I truly lost track of time this evening: every time I looked at the clock, several hours had gone by and though I know I have to get some sleep, I am just so tempted to continue playing. Not only that, I feel like I want to play some SCII too right now. It's going to be very hard to force myself to go to sleep tonight (this morning), I am sure of it.

It fascinates me to no end when a game makes a surprising comeback like this.

Random Game of the Day

SpellForce Universe (2007)
Induction Date: 06/02/2008

Don't force me into casting this spell on you... You dirty orc!

I should really be playing more StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty but of course, I just had to deviate my attention away by playing some SpellForce. This "Universe" release includes all 5 SpellForce games. I have purchased the original SpellForce: The Order of Dawn on 12/14/2004 and the sequel, Shadow Wars on 05/19/2006 but I never picked up any of their individual expansions and since this  edition was very cheap and should be much cheaper now, I just had to pick it up. What makes the SpellForce series so special is its fun mix of both role playing game and real time strategy: You are provided with one central hero character and his/her supporting party members who level up, gain abilities, and can be customized both in what they have equipped and their individual growth statistics. Then, you are also provided with the ability to collect resources and build a base to recruit massive army units to fight along your side. The game can be played in both the usual overhead camera typical of a RTS or you can zoomed in to a third person view behind your main character. The best thing about this game is that it doesn't even attempt to dumb down the gameplay features from the two genres. The hybrid works quite well but I prefer the RPG elements of the game because they provide you with a good sense of progression whenever you have to rebuild your base for the larger battles since your main character is continually getting stronger through each of them. The first game looks a bit blocky now but the sequel is still visually pleasing. If you have never played any of the SpellForce games and love either RPG or RTS titles, or maybe both, you can't go wrong with picking up this game. Please note that this particular release is buggy though but it's easily fixable by doing this file replacement for the first disc as well as the applying this solution to the second disc.
