RANDOM GAME OF THE DAY:
Skygunner (2002)
Developer: Pixel Art
Platform: PlayStation 2
Purchase Date: 06/28/2002
The female pilot Femme has a braided tail on her butt... Pretty disturbing.
Skygunner is an excellent shooter that is graphically too ahead of its time. It still has some of the best looking volumetric clouds and smoke effects to date as well as a magnificent view distance. All of this comes at the hefty price of frame rate AND screen resolution drops during crowded battles and boss encounters. There is an option to reduce the frame rate for a more consistent experience but doing so also reduces the game's resolution so you are better off playing the game with some slowdown and ugly-pixilation moments. The flight and shooting mechanics are easy to control. Though the environments you get to fly in are huge, the game's smart lock-on system reduces the occurrences of aimless maneuvering commonly seen in the genre. The game has a competitive element to it that tracks the best score performance between the player and the computer-controlled pilots. This game truly deserves a sequel because with the current technology, its potential would be limitless.
